The horticulture is one of the non-traditional sub sectors that contributes significantly to Uganda’s foreign exchange earnings. It is contributing over US$ 95 million annually. The sub sector is growing with a number of fruit, vegetable and flower exporting companies making a break through to the European Union market. The sub sector enjoys competitive advantage of hot humid temperatures which is idea for growth of horticulture. The sub sector has enormous investment opportunities that still need to be exploited. However, there are challenges of meeting the phytosanitary standards and traceability systems. The Matching Grant Facility will support enterprises to acquire mandatory certification, improve the quality standards and branding of Uganda’s horticulture products in the major markets to increase exports.
