The major raw materials for production of edible oils in Uganda are; sunflower, cotton seedcake, soybean and oil palm. The production vegetable oil in Uganda has increased. However, Uganda is still importing edible oil to meet the increasing local demand which is estimated at 4.3 kilogrammes per capital consumption. Despite the favourable weather and fertile soils that support the growth of these crops, there are constraints hindering the growth of the sub sector. These constraints include; limited access to quality seeds, unstable market prices, high operational costs due to irregular power supply, limited number of refineries, lack of funds for research, poor packaging of products and the volatile fuel and dollar rates. The Matching Grant Facility with work closely with the sector associations in the edible oils sub sector to increase productivity and support the actors to address the constraints.
